Everyday ways to spend less

Start with one or two ideas. A small saving that becomes a habit is more useful than an exhausting one-off challenge.

Look at what leaves automatically

Check one month of bank transactions for subscriptions, renewals and memberships.

  • Cancel things you no longer use
  • Note contract end dates
  • Compare the full annual cost

Shop from home first

Before buying food, clothes or household items, check what you already own.

  • Plan meals around cupboards
  • Keep a freezer list
  • Use open packets first

Pause non-essential purchases

Save the item and wait 24 hours before buying it.

  • Ask what problem it solves
  • Check second-hand options
  • Borrow occasional-use items

Set a fun-money amount

A clear amount for treats can feel better than saying no to everything.

  • Choose a weekly figure
  • Let unspent money roll over
  • Plan the treat you value most

Reduce convenience spending

Prepare for the times you normally buy because you are tired, rushed or hungry.

  • Carry drinks and snacks
  • Keep an easy freezer meal
  • Plan tomorrow the night before

Check income as well as spending

Benefits, Council Tax Support and free school meals may save more than cutting small treats.

  • Use a benefits calculator
  • Check Council reductions
  • Ask for free advice

Make food money stretch further

Food is often the largest flexible weekly cost, so a little planning can make a visible difference.

Plan five meals, not seven

Leave room for leftovers, changed plans and a quick freezer meal.

Compare price per 100g

The largest pack is not always the best value, especially if some will be wasted.

Choose one low-cost base

Build several meals around potatoes, rice, pasta, oats, lentils or beans.

Use local food projects

Check Crofton’s Pop-up Greengrocer, affordable food options and community projects.

Turn small wins into a goal

If you save a little during the week, give it a purpose rather than letting it disappear into general spending.

£1First coin or transfer
£5A small buffer
£10One avoided purchase
£25A useful household cushion
£40A completed challenge target

Your goal could be an emergency buffer, a school-holiday day out, Christmas, replacing an essential item or simply making next week easier.

When saving tips are not enough

If there is not enough money for food, energy, rent or other essentials, the answer is not a stricter challenge. Free advice can help check benefits, priority bills, grants and realistic repayment options.

Common questions

Does the £40 include rent and household bills?
No. The challenge is for flexible spending after unavoidable fixed commitments and essential needs are covered. Do not delay rent, Council Tax, energy, medication, essential travel, childcare or agreed debt payments.
What if £40 is unrealistic for my household?
Choose a safe amount based on your household size, food already available and necessary spending. The useful part is planning and tracking—not hitting an arbitrary number.
What if I go over the amount?
Record what happened without judging yourself. An unexpected cost can show what needs to be included next time. Keep one idea that worked and adjust the amount.
Should I use savings to pay debt?
That depends on the debt, interest, priority bills and whether you have an emergency buffer. Get free independent advice before making a decision that could leave you unable to cover essentials.
